     Living In Portsmouth

    About Portsmouth:

Portsmouth, located in New Hampshire’s picturesque Seacoast region, is a city of approximately 21,000 people. Originally settled in the 1630’s, Portsmouth is one of the oldest cities in the nation. Portsmouth is located in close proximity to many New England points of interest, including being within 60 miles of Boston, 55 miles of Portland, ME, and 50 miles of Manchester, the largest city in NH. Despite its proximity to larger cities, Portsmouth maintains a small-town feel, which is evident in its quaint downtown area. Downtown Portsmouth features many classic brick buildings, and boasts exceptional dining and shopping opportunities.

    Portsmouth Attractions:

Due to Portsmouth’s early settlement, the city is full of fascinating historical sites. They include the USS Albacore Museum, a converted 1950’s submarine which served as a prototype for modern submarines. Another notable historical site is the Strawbery Banke Museum (shown below) whose buildings were formerly the oldest European settlement in New Hampshire. Today, it is an outdoor history museum which offers a fascinating perspective on life in the 17th century. Across the street from Strawbery Banke is Prescott park, a beautiful 10-acre waterfront park which annually holds the Prescott Park Arts Festival.

Portsmouth has more to offer than history, however. Marine enthusiasts can take a boat to the Isles
of Shoals, located 6 miles off the shore, and engage in some whale watching or sightseeing. Those who
are interested in fine shopping and dining can visit downtown, where there are many opportunities for
both. There are also many activities for children, from the Childrens Museum of New Hampshire in nearby
Dover to Water Country, New England’s largest water park, in Portsmouth.
